David Ward, Planning Director for Wilson Bowden Developments promised some two years ago to Bishop’s Stortford traders and shoppers that the first of the new parking facilities would be ready for Christmas 2006.

David Ward, Planning Director said;
“We have been working closely with East Herts Council to deliver on our promise, and some 350 spaces will be provided by the opening of the ground floor level of the car park in December. This will no doubt boost trade in the town centre in the run up to Christmas.”

Construction Director, Steve Emmerson commented;
“It has been a complex job to get the car park open. The remainder of the development is progressing well and we are well on schedule to open the remainder of the development in Spring 2007.”

The parking provided within Jackson Square will be in addition to the existing park and ride facility which will continue to run over the Christmas period.

The new pay-and-display multi-storey will be operated by East Herts Council and patrolled by its parking attendants frequently. It also has CCTV as a crime deterrent measure.

Cllr Malcolm Alexander, East Herts Council’s Executive member for environmental management, said: “We’re delighted that Bishop’s Stortford will benefit from an extra 350 spaces for shoppers in time for the Christmas rush. We look forward to the rest of the development, and the boost to the economy that will undoubtedly bring, in 2007.”

The car park will be open to short-stay motorists from 7.30am on Saturday, December 9.
