DEMOLITION AT FORMER DEMAGLASS SITE

A major local landmark has disappeared in a cloud of smoke, when the two chimneys on the former Demaglass works in Chesterfield were demolished by explosion.

The Mayor of Chesterfield, Cllr Trudi Mulcaster, pressed the plunger on Sunday 20 August, marking an important stage in the regeneration of the site.

Site owners and developers, Wilson Bowden Developments, are currently in pre-planning application discussions with Chesterfield Borough Council in relation to the former Demaglass site, and it is anticipated that a planning application for a mixed use scheme will be submitted during Autumn 2006, following a period of public consultation.

The proposals are to include a new home for Chesterfield Football Club, who are in discussions with the developers regarding a relocation from their existing Saltergate site.

Neil Hartley, development director at Wilson Bowden Developments, commented: “The site has changed remarkably during the demolition process over the last few months and represents a major investment for the Company and the future of Chesterfield. The development proposals due to be unveiled in the Autumn will mark the start of the regeneration of the River Rother corridor, which is a key objective in Chesterfield Borough Council’s strategy for the redevelopment of the Town.”
