Wilson Bowden Developments Wins Barnstaple Scheme

Wilson Bowden Developments have been selected to transform part of Barnstaple’s town centre with a 300,000 sq ft retail and leisure led mixed use scheme.

North Devon District Council this week announced their selection of preferred development partner, Wilson Bowden Developments, from 7 other bidders for the redevelopment of a 12 acre site bordering Queen Street and Bear Street.

Leader of the Council, Cllr Malcolm Prowse said;

“This is the most important decision made for Barnstaple in the last 25 years and is an exciting opportunity. The chosen partner understands Barnstaple, what we need and most importantly they are able to deliver it.”

The proposed scheme, designed by architects Benoy, will enhance the existing retail and leisure offering within the town. Anchored by a 90,000 sq ft department store, the proposals also include a 30,000 sq ft foodstore, additional shops and restaurants and enhanced car parking facilities. There will also be an element of residential accommodation within the scheme including affordable housing.

Emma Newman, Development Manager for Wilson Bowden Developments said;

“We are delighted to have been chosen as preferred development partner and will be working closely with North Devon District Council to deliver a scheme that will not only enhance the existing retail and leisure facilities within the town centre but that provides the next step in the town's renaissance. This is a true mixed use development incorporating retail, leisure and residential and provides us with a fantastic opportunity to once again prove our expertise in town centre regeneration.”
