STUDENTS GET A TASTE OF DEVELOPMENT ON WREXHAM’S LARGEST CONSTRUCTION SITE

A group of students from Ysgol Morgan Llwyd were treated to first hand experience of a working building site with a tour of the new 400,000 sq ft Eagles Meadow development.

The students are studying for a BTEC in Construction and in particular have been looking in detail at Health & Safety issues on a construction site and the various trades used on a site.

After a full health and safety briefing from Neil Thomas, Health and Safety Manager for Wilson Bowden Developments, the tour of Eagles Meadow was carried out by newly appointed Centre Manager, Simon Pullen.

During the tour the students were taken through the centre of the development and along what will be known, when completed, as Smithfield Circle, they were then taken up to the balcony where the Odeon Cinema and Tenpin are located. The real treat for the students was to see inside the cinema unit where each of the 8 screens is being partitioned off and the base for the seating is being installed.

Simon Pullen commented: “The timing of the students visit to site was perfect. With construction progressing at a pace in time for the opening at the end of October the site is a hive of activity, with all possible trades working on the site from bricklayers to carpenters and electricians to plumbers, the students really got the feel of a busy development site”

The tour ended with a walk down by the ‘Spanish Steps’ and a view inside the second largest retail unit in the development; 55,000 sq ft let by Marks & Spencer.

Aled Hughes is the teacher of the course at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, he said;
'This was a valuable opportunity for our pupils to have first hand experience of a large scale construction site where a number of trades, skills and materials were evident which supported the areas being studied in the classroom. We are grateful to Simon Pullen and Wilson Bowen Developments for providing the pupils with this opportunity to see the classroom theory actually being put into practice”
